Paul Conroy hammered home a 30-foot birdie putt on the 18th to win his second collegiate title in style as he edged to a one shot victory at the Furman Intercollegiate.

It’s the second collegiate win in the space of a week for Irish golf after Sara Byrne’s heroics for Miami. It was almost a double celebration for Conroy and his Chattanooga team but they finished second in the team leaderboard, missing out by a shot to host college, Furman.

Enniscorthy native Conroy carded rounds of 70, 64 and 71 for an eight-under total and it was a strong finish that saw him leapfrog his teammate Samuel Espinosa at the death as he birdied two of his last four holes.

Fellow Chattanooga golfer John Houk was third on six-under-par.

“So happy for Paul getting the win and the great finishes by Sam and John,” Coach Blaine Woodruff shared before departing Greenville. “Paul’s transformed his game to where he can win even when he’s not ‘on’. His short game has become unbelievable reminding me of Jordan Spieth.

“This one stung to lose as a team. It’s not often you have guys finish 1-2-3. As a group, we just weren’t as disciplined as we needed to be this week. It’s a great example of the value of every shot. We will learn from this and get ready for Steelwood.”
