2021 runner-up Deirdre Smith had to go 36 holes to reach the Semi-Finals. After defeating Clodagh Hopkins in the morning, Smith was taken to the 18th once more in the afternoon, defeating Maria O’Reilly on the final green.

Despite the long day, the Co. Louth golfer was delighted to get through to the final day.

“I hung in throughout the day, and played well on the back nine in both matches. I was 3 down in the two of them.

“I figured out what I was doing wrong in the afternoon and worked from there. I’m pleased to get through after the two tough matches.

“This week, I haven’t had my best stuff. I found something in the afternoon, and hopefully I can hold onto it tomorrow.”

2021 Men’s champion Karl Bornemann overcame leading qualifier Joe Lyons in the Quarter-Finals on the Senior Men’s Close.

The Douglas golfer defeated Lyons on the 17th, to move one step closer to retaining the title he won in Waterford last year.

“It was a long day. I was supposed to be at a family wedding, but it’s great to still be defending the title.

“I’m delighted to get through the two matches. It’s all about getting some rest this evening and resetting for tomorrow.

“I played Joe years ago in the Interpros in Douglas. He’s a great player, but I was delighted to scrape through. John Reynolds has been in great form this year so it’ll be a test tomorrow morning.

In the Plate competition of the Women’s Close, Paula Murray, Ann Moynihan-Rudden, Catherine Reilly and Shirley Real will compete in the Semi-Finals on Friday morning.
