Beth Coulter is through to the second round of the matchplay at the Women’s Amateur Championship as Roisin Scanlon’s championship came to an end on Wednesday afternoon.

Both players had made the 36-hole cut to advance to the last-64 and were the only two Irish players remaining at Hunstanton but now Coulter is the last Irish girl standing after a narrow 2&1 win over Switzerland’s Natalie Armbruester.

14-year-old Scanlon who was the leading Irish qualifier and is a Hunstanton member as well as Woburn lost 3&1 to Germany’s Tara Bettle.

Irish Women’s Close champion Coulter will face Englishwoman Jessica Baker at 09.50 on Thursday for a place in the last-16.

The top ranked player in the field Ingird Lindblad who broke the US Women’s Open scoring record for an amateur in the first round in Pine Needles is safely through after a 3&1 win over Icelandic golfer Perla Sól Sigurbrandsdóttir.

Girls Amateur champion Hannah Darling who beat Coulter in the final also booked her place in the last-32 as did beaten 2020 finalist Annabell Fuller.

Leading qualifier Ami Yamashita crashed out in the opening match losing 2UP to Germany’s Chiara Horder while local girl and Curtis Cup player Amelia-Jane Williamson came through her match in the afternoon capping off a great birthday!

“I’m happy that I get to play golf on my birthday,” said Williamson. “That’s what I was kind of motivated by today, I just really wanted to be here tomorrow.

“I’ve been a member at quite a few clubs growing up in my childhood. So a lot of the members at the clubs that I’ve been a member at have come to support me from many, many years ago which is really nice.”
