After his superhuman effort at the Masters, Tiger Woods is up against it to play all four rounds in the PGA Championship at Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Woods, winner of the 2007 PGA Championship when last at Southern Hills, is in doubt to be present for his second-round tee time and if so, the 15-time major champion faces an enormous turnaround in fortunes to match his stunning Augusta National showing if he’s also to play all four days.
Woods, teeing-up in the company of Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth, was two-under early on with birdies at his first and fifth holes or the 10th and 14th on the scorecard.
He headed into his back nine clearly in some discomfort, and looked to be in serious pain following a tee shot on the par-3 eighth or the 17th hole of his day.
Woods ended the round by hitting a tree off the tee, with tee shot going just under 200-yards, and then leaving 190 yards to the green where he ended his day’s work posting a bogey ‘5’.
Woods had managed a third birdie of his round at the third or the 12th hole but it was a disappointing scorecard with double the number of bogeys.
Then to his enormous credit, and as Woods has done throughout his career, he spoke to the waiting media albeit not a long fireside chat.
“Well, got off to a good start, as you said. Hit a lot of bad iron shots in the middle part of the round and late in the round and consequently I just never got the ball close for any birdie putts”, he said.
“They’re all long putts or had to try and get up-and-down, and just put myself in bad spots”,
As for his leg?
“It has felt better before. It’s a little sore right now, and we’ll go back and start the process of getting ready for tomorrow”, he said.
“What I need now is lots of treatment, lots of ice baths, and try and get the inflammation out and try and get ready for tomorrow”.
