Rebekah Gardner finished her Scottish Girls Open Championship on a high as she fired a blistering final round of five-under 67 to move into the top-7 at Irvine.

Gardner shot the low round of the day for a three-over total and she finished ten shots adrift of eventual winner England’s Rachel Gourley.

Knock native Katie Poots finished in a share of tenth place on five-over after a superb back nine rescued a level-par 72.

They say all great rounds start with a bogey and that proved the case for Clandeboye’s Gardner. After a dropped shot on the first the teenager reeled off five birdies in seven holes to turn in 32. A brace of gains on 3 and 4 was followed by birdies on the sixth, eighth and ninth.

After an electric opening nine the inward nine was rather quiet in comparison with a lone birdie on the eleventh being surrounded by eight pars as she came home in 35.

Poots had started her campaign well with a one-under 71 but a second round 78 put paid to her hopes and she appeared to be still smarting from Thursday’s round as she made the turn in 40 in her final round.

Poote bogeyed the 3rd and 8th while also carding a double-bogey on the 7th. But the Mayo native recovered in some style with a birdie, eagle start to her back nine and she finished with a flourish, closing her round with a birdie to finish the day as she started.
