Conor O’Rourke and Robin Dawson showed no signs of a New Year hangover by taking second place on their seasonal reappearance at the MENA Tour’s 2020 Arena Shootout in Ras Al Khaimah.
With a place in next week’s Dubai Desert Classic up for grabs for the winner, that prize was always out of reach as Frenchman Romain Wattel romped home with rounds of 66 and 69 for a six shot win at Al Hamra Beach Resort & Golf Club.
Naas pro O’Rourke and Portmarnock Links’ ace Dawson could only manage three-under par 36-hole totals in response to the Frenchman but could be content with their encouraging showing; O’Rourke even doubling down on the display with news that he’s become the first Irish player to sign a contract with Underpin Sports.
It’s Official @UnderpinSports ??
Finished T2nd at my first event of the 2020 season on @theMENATour today & topping it off by signing my contract to be the first Irish player in the Underpin family ☘️ Looking forward to working with the team on and off the course these season! pic.twitter.com/2U5Rkwjfro

In a decent showing for Ireland’s travelling party, Portmarnock’s Purcell returned rounds of 70 and 72 for a fifth place finish on two-under.
Headfort’s Rory McNamara shared 17th at four-over with The Island’s Paul McBride two shots further adrift in tied 20th.
