Clandeboye’s Jonathan Caldwell birdied the last to sign for a hard-fought two-over par round of 74 at the Alfred Dunhill in South Africa.
10 years since he last competed full-time on the Main Tour, the 35-year old bogeyed two of his first three holes in a tough introduction to moving day at Leopard Creek Country Club.
Caldwell bounced back with birdies at 4 and 6 to make the turn in even par but more trouble was to come on his homeward half.
He double-bogeyed the par-5 13th and dropped another on 14 to slip back to plus-two for the tournament before a final hole birdie salvaged a decent return with the Northern Irishman tied 26th ahead of the final day.
At the top, Spain’s Pablo Larrazabal retained his three shot advantage over Dutchman Wil Besseling after both players signed for rounds of 70.
Larrazabal leads at 11-under par in Malelane with home favourite Branden Grace a shot further back in third at seven-under par.
