David Carey bogeyed the 72nd hole to miss out by a single stroke at Bermuda Run Country Club in North Carolina at the first stage of PGA Tour Q-School.
With the top-19 and ties slated to advance to the second stage, the big-hitting Dubliner had battled his way back from an opening four-over 75, turning in rounds of 69 and 67 respectively to enter the final day one shot outside the provisional mark.
Two early birdies set him on his way nicely, but a bogey at 11 left him straddling the line once more. Another birdie at 15 brought him back inside the mark, but a disappointing finish saw him make a five on the par-5 17th and followed up with another five at the par-4 closing hole and he’d ultimately end up tied for 21st, with 20 players advancing to the second stage.
This means another year of uncertainty for the man who successfully navigated Monday qualifying to make two PGA Tour starts in 2023, the first coming at the Valero Texas Open before repeating the feat at the RBC Canadian Open in June, unfortunately missing the cut on both occasions.
Carey has based himself in the United States, playing on mini tours and pre-tournament qualifiers hoping that one good week could prove life changing, but it appears that he’ll have to go the Monday route again if it’s to happen this year.
