Seven Irish players will bid to book their spot in The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in a fortnight when they tee it up at Final Qualifying on Tuesday.
Alex Maguire made his Open Championship debut at Royal Liverpool in 2023 and he would love to reacquaint himself with that part of England and drive an hour up the road to the Southport area if he can get over the line at West Lancashire.
The Laytown & Bettystown man has been in excellent form on the Clutch Pro Tour including notching his maiden professional win at the Rapsodo Championship.
Maguire will be joined in West Lancs by Edmondstown amateur Liam Abom who topped the local qualifying in The Island last week. The field at that venue is stacked with talent including former Masters champions Sergio Garcia and Danny Willett. Matt Wallace is another notable name competing.
Max Kennedy is the next marquee Irishman in the field for a gruelling 36 holes and he has selected Burnham and Berrow as his golf course where he will look to oust the likes of Marc Leishman and Sahith Theegala.
Dundalk PGA Professional Cian Geraghty, Ruaidhri McGee, amateurs David Howard and Jordan Boles make up the rest of the Irish contingent at Dundonald Links. Killeen Castle’s John Gough is at Royal Cinque Ports.
Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, Pádraig Harrington, Darren Clarke, Tom McKibbin and Amateur champion Stuart Grehan are already exempt into the Open Championship field.
