Padraig Harrington has work to do to make the cut, while Darren Clarke sits in the top 10 of the Kaulig Companies Championship, the 3rd senior major of the year
Looking to bounce back from major heartbreak in the US Senior PGA Championship, Harrington mixed four bogeys with a solitary birdie for a three-over-par 75 to sit six back of leaders Soren Kjieldson and Ricardo Gonzalez. Clarke’s round could have been better, but two back-nine bogeys offset two front nine birdies for a level-par 72 to leave him in a tie for tenth, three off the lead.
2015 Irish Open winner Kjeldsen of Denmark and Gonzalez of Argentina each shot 3-under-par 67’s on Firestone South to share the lead Thursday after the opening round in Akron, Ohio, on a course which previously hosted the World Series of Golf and then a World Golf Championship.
Meanwhile, Stewart Cink, who lost in a four-hole playoff to Tiger Woods at Firestone in 2006 at a World Golf Championship, was poised to take the lead until two bogeys on his final three holes and Ángel Cabrera, who has already captured two Senior Majors (the Regions Tradition and the Senior PGA Championship at Congressional), opened with a 71.
