Love him or loathe him, Bryson DeChambeau has become the biggest story in golf but was it science or a bruised ego that sparked his rapid weight gain?

Irish golfing hero and three-time major winner, Padraig Harrington helped launch The K Club Irish PGA Pro AM competition on the famous Ryder Cup Course at The K Club in Straffan, Co. Kildare yesterday.

The tournament will run over 2 days, the 5-6th of May when teams made up of three amateurs and one Irish PGA Professional will battle it out for golfing glory on both of The K Club’s Championship Courses, The Ryder Cup Course and The Smurfit Course, home to several European Opens.  A prize pot of €20,000 is up for grabs for the leading Irish golf Professionals while the amateurs can win some stunning prizes including canteens of cutlery for the winning team, courtesy of Irish lifestyle company, Newbridge Silverware.

Over 120 amateur golfers will play in the tournament alongside some of Ireland’s leading Irish PGA Professionals.

Speaking at The K Club today Padraig Harrington said, “The owner of The K Club, Dr. Michael Smurfit, has been one of the most ardent and loyal supporters of the PGA in Ireland and his support and the support of all the team at The K Club is essential for the continual growth of golf in this country.  The K Club has two of Europe’s most stunning courses, it’s always a pleasure to play here.”

The first day of action will take place on the Smurfit Course, while the spectacular Ryder Cup Course will play host to the event on the second day.   Teams cost €1,350 and the price includes golf on both courses, food on arrival each day, a BBQ on the first evening and a gala dinner on the second day.

Speaking in advance of the Pro Am, Sharon Smurfit, Director of Golf at The K Club said, “We are really looking forward to welcoming all the Irish PGA professionals along with our members and guests to participate in the event and we look forward to hosting this exciting tournament. We are also very pleased to support Irish golf through the PGA in Ireland and are really delighted to have the many sponsors on board who have helped support this competition.”

PGA in Ireland Regional Manager, Michael McCumiskey said, “Ever since it opened in 1991 The K Club has proven to be a long standing supporter of the PGA, going back to staging Irish Championships and in more recent times quality Pro-Ams on the Ryder Cup Course.
From the perspective of our professionals, a chance to visit and play there is never to be missed. This will no doubt be reflected in the entries from our members and the amateurs who will play in the Pro-Am on 5th and 6th May, with the professionals taking a particular interest in competing for the generous prize-fund of €20,000.”
Irish Golfer are sponsors of the event with Cairn PLC, Crystal Air, MCM Engineering Inc, Newbridge Silverware and TLC Nursing Homes.

The K Club Irish PGA Pro Am helps to support the Irish Professional Golfers’ Association in Ireland, and this promises to be a fantastic event with some top quality golf.
