There’s just one round to go at the Men’s and Women’s Senior Amateur Championships at Frilford Heath Golf Club in Oxfordshire, and Irish golfers are in the hunt for glory in both.

County Louth’s Deirdre Smith goes into the final round on the Red Course in a share of sixth place after two birdies in her final three holes of round three saw her close the gap to joint leaders Emma Brown of England and American Lara Tennant.

At +9 through 54 holes, Smith trails by five strokes but is by no means out of the running and her third-round 73 (-1) was the lowest score of the day by two.

Royal Portrush’s Laura Webb is tied for 13th at +15, with Maria Reilly of Headfort and Milltown’s Deirdre Walsh one further adrift and sharing 18th.

Meanwhile, over on the Blue Course, Jody Fanagan’s one-under 71 lifted the Milltown man into a share of eighth place alongside Douglas’ Karl Bornemann at level-par and they are just four shots back from solo leader Bryan Hoops from the United States.

The low round of the day belonged to Michael McCoy who carded a five-under 67 to climb into solo second, one shot behind his fellow American.

Shane Kennealy, currently residing in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, is tied for 34th at +9, while Grange’s Declan O’Neill and East Clare’s Tony Cleary are in 50th and 51st place respectively.
