John Doyle and Stuart Grehan will arrive in Seapoint this week in fine fettle after they finished 5th and 6th respectively at the Lytham Trophy on Sunday.

Teenage star Doyle proved his mettle on the tough Royal Lytham & St Annes test with a final round of 69 to finish in solo fifth place on two-over, six shots behind Finland’s Lauri Rosendahl.

The Fota Island man displayed a patience beyond his years as he remained cool after a bogey on the 3rd to birdie the 13th and 16th and end his debut appearance in the tournament on a high.

Las year’s Walker Cup star for GB&I, Grehan, saved his best for last as he closed with a final round of 68 to take a share of sixth place on plus four.

The County Louth man will defend his Irish Amateur title next door this week and he will be buoyed by a bogey free round where he carded two birdies and sixteen pars.

As Walker Cup auditions go, this was a fruitful one even at this early stage for the pair who were among the four highest finishers from the UK and Ireland.

Meanwhile, Patrick Curran claimed a share of 30th as he closed with a 70 for a thirteen-over total.
