Ireland were narrowly beaten 5.5-3.5 by Switzerland on day one of the Women’s Octagonal Matches in Costa Ballena, Spain.

A strong singles showing from the Swiss ensured they took the tie away from the Girls in Green and won both sessions.

Ireland started well with the in form Kate Lanigan (Hermitage) and Mairead Martin (Kanturk) romping to a 7&6 win in the opening foursomes match before Switzerland took the session 2-1.

Annabel Wilson (Lurgan) levelled proceedings at two points apiece with a 2&1 win in the top singles match although Jessica Ross (Clandeboye), Olivia Costello (Roscommon) and Anna Abom (Edmondstown), were all beaten.

Martin made it two from two and remains the only Irish player with a 100% record with a 2UP win in her singles match while Lanigan is unbeaten after sharing the spoils in the anchor game of the singles.

Ireland will take on France, looking to keep their hopes alive.
