Kate Lanigan moved into a share of fifth place at the halfway stage of the 94th Portuguese Ladies Amateur Championship.

Lanigan carded a second round of 70 to climb to five-under-par, but is a distant eight shots adrift of runaway leader Helen Briem of Germany who shot rounds of 67 and 66 to soar to -13.

The Hermitage golfer had a hot start with three birdies in her first five holes before adding a fourth birdie on the 8th, sandwiched between the sixth and ninth.

A clean back nine of eight pars and a birdie at the par-4 14th lifted her into the top-5.

Also on the march is Lurgan’s Annabel Wilson who is beginning to show some of the form that saw her play on the Great Britain and Ireland Curtis Cup team in 2021.

Wilson carded an excellent round of 68 to move to four-under-par, having carded a one-over 74 on day one.

Wilson registered six birdies and just one bogey as she climbed into a share of ninth place.

Elm Park’s Emma Fleming occupies 16th position after a level-par 73 saw her remain at one-under-par while Olivia Costello is T49 and Mairead Martin T65.
