Former Great Britain and Walker Cup player Caolan Rafferty is the headline act at this weekend’s Lee Valley Senior Scratch Cup sponsored by Boylesports with a stacked field set to compete at Lee Valley Golf & Country Club.

Dundalk’s Rafferty is making his maiden appearance in the event as is his club mate Eoin Murphy.

The former South and West of Ireland champion leads the handicap table at +5.0 and he will look to go one better than his playoff defeat in the Laytown&Bettystown Scratch Cup last month.

Connacht Boys champion Jack Murphy (Douglas) will be hoping the title stays in the Rebel county and he is in excellent form after he came from behind to win last week in Ballinrobe.

Defending champion Gary O’Flaherty (Cork) has won three of the last four editions and will be chasing a fifth win in what is a remarkable record in this event.

O’Flaherty first lifted the title in 2012.

Lee Valley member was in the final group here last year and hopes of a first home win since 2011 have been heightened with the arrival of Ben Murray from Waterford Castle Golf Club.

Lee Valley Captain, Liam Power is expecting an exciting weekend and has his fingers crossed for a home winner.

“As the 2023 Captain and like all other previous Captains you’re excited to put your calendar together for the year ahead with annual Lee Valley Senior Scratch been high on the list to lock in dates,” he says. ”

I’m really looking forward to seeing the best amateurs test their skills against Lee Valley course.  I’ve played in a few of them and can testify the challenge that faces the lads.  David Keohane and the greenkeeping staff have put a lot of work into the course last year and beginning of this year  –  I’m pretty confident this course will be in superb condition as a real test for these elite golfers.

“We came close last year with local member Ian Bohane in the last group with a great chance of winning but unfortunately it wasn’t to be Ian’s day. Not being biased, it would be great for our club if we could have member come out on top and hopefully it happens this year.

“It goes without saying but having a sponsor and partner like Boyles sports really helps to levitate the Lee Valley Scratch Cup and we as a club really appreciate their support again this year. Every year to sit down with Boyles sports regarding the sponsorship they are always committed and willing to support LVSSC event.  I’d recommend members and anybody else interested in Golf to come out and see these talented guys and here’s to super weekend for all these golfer and here’s to a Lee Valley winner.”

The event will be played across Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd of April over 54 holes of stroke play.

36 holes will be played on Saturday with the top-30 and ties advancing to the final round.

Previous winners of this event include Shane Lowry and Irish Amateur Open champion, Colm Campbell.

This is a World Amateur Golf Ranking tournament.
