Maynooth University’s Kate Dwyer trails joint leaders Megan Ashley and Lorna McClymont by three shots as she continued her hot form on the opening day of the R&A Student Tour Series final in St Andrews.

Playing the Jubilee Course, Dwyer shot a two-over-par 76 to lie in a share of third place.

The Law student recovered well from three opening bogeys with three successive birdies to make the turn in level-par.

The Monaghan woman dropped shots on 13 and 15 before birdieing the par-5 16th. A bogey on 18 closed out a solid first round.

Meanwhile in the men’s competition, Maynooth entered the day with four players in with a shout of the Order of Merit.

Aaron Marshall led the way in the rankings in second with Ryan Griffin in third, Alan Fahy fourth and Simon Walker 6th.

Walker, Fahy and Griffin are all tied for sixth on one-under alongside fellow Maynoothian, Eoin Murphy after rounds of 71.

The quartet trail Jack Leversidge by five shots.

Marshall is a shot further back on level-par after an opening 72 while 2022 Student Series Order of Merit winner David Kitt is on one-over.
