Kirkistown Castle’s Beth Coulter is just four shots off the lead after a strong finish to her opening round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate.

Coulter birdied two of her last four holes to post a level-par 71 and lie in a share of ninth place, four off the early pace set by Megan Schofill.

The teenager bogeyed two of her opening three holes before getting a shot back on the ninth. The Arizona State star got back to level-par with a birdie on the par-3 13th before undoing all her hard work with a double-bogey 6 on 14.

Birdies on 15 and 17 capped a perfect response to that setback as she moved into the hunt for a maiden collegiate title.

Aine Donegan’s LSU team share the lead in the team competition with a combined one-under score.

Donegan of Lahinch is in a share of 51st place on five-over-par.

Lauren Walsh is the next best of the Irish on the individual leaderboard after posting a two-over 73 that included 16 pars and two bogeys while Auburn’s Anna Foster is a shot further back after a birdie less round of her own left her on three-over with her Auburn team in third overall, two shots off the pace.
