Almost every golfer dreams of having a hole in one, and those that don’t are probably the lucky golfers who’ve already had an ace. So imagine not only acing a hole, but also winning a €40,000 car!
Well, that’s what happened to Fota Island’s Paul O’Connell last month when he was competing in the Cork Chamber Golf Classic in Cork Golf Club.
Paul, who play’s off 14, recorded his first hole in one on the ninth and while he was delighted with his achievement, he was playing as part of a team event and after a brief celebration he and his team headed to the 10th tee to start their second nine.
News of the achievement spread quickly and while the Chamber have had a charity hole in one competition for many years this was the first time that there was a winner.
Obviously enough a €40,000 prize means there’s a certain process to follow, and Johnson & Perrott who were sponsoring the charity hole in one competition jumped into action to ensure Paul got his brand new Jaguar.
Many classics and corporate days now include cars or other large prizes for holes in one and it’s becoming more popular with many dealerships sponsoring the prize as a number of UK insurance companies now provide cover.
While there have been plenty of opportunities to win, this looks like being the first time that someone has collected on the big prize in Cork.
“The car had been on display at the 9th hole, it was brought back to our dealership in Mahonpoint to register and get prepared for handover to Paul”, explained Karen Dillon, Marketing Manager for Johnson & Perrott. “We were all thrilled to invite Paul & guests into the showroom to take delivery of his new Jaguar XE.”
