Plans have been lodged for a new championship-standard golf course in County Derry, Northern Ireland, on a striking coastal site overlooking Lough Foyle.
A Proposal of Application Notice (PAN) has been submitted to Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council for the development at Bellarena, roughly half an hour north-east of Derry and 10 minutes north of Limavady, with the 125-hectare site situated on the north side of the River Roe where it meets Lough Foyle and running in a northerly direction up the estuary coastline.
The application, submitted by TSA Planning on behalf of Galgorm Castle Estates Limited, seeks permission for an 18-hole championship course along with a new clubhouse (including bar and restaurant), practice facilities, a short-course driving range and putting areas. Eight golf lodges, operational and maintenance buildings, parking, a wastewater treatment plant and an irrigation system are also proposed.
Galgorm Castle Estates already owns Galgorm Castle Golf Club, the well-known championship venue and hotel/spa resort near Ballymena, and Roe Valley Resort, complete with hotel and 18-hole parkland golf course, which lies roughly eight kilometres southeast of the site for the new course.
Additionally, the golf courses at Castlerock, Portstewart and Royal Portrush are all within a 45-minute drive along the coast.
The plans further include creating new access from the former Bellarena Primary School site and reconstructing a historic military building on the land.
Further details are expected in the coming weeks as the application progresses through the planning process.
