There are few things that define a golf club quite like its traditions and at Newlands Golf Club, the annual Scratch Cups have quickly established themselves as one of the highlights of the calendar.
First introduced in 2016, what began as a relatively new competition has grown into a prestigious annual event, attracting strong fields and producing a roll of honour that reflects the quality of golfers who have taken part over the years.
A particularly important figure in the development of the competition was Brendan O’Sullivan, a long-standing Newlands member and former committee member. Brendan generously sponsored both the Senior and Junior Scratch Cups and provided the trophies that are presented to the winners.
His contribution helped establish the competition and ensured that each year’s winners would have their names permanently recorded on trophies that have since become an important part of the Club’s golfing history.
The event provides an opportunity for Newlands members to compete against talented golfers from other clubs, while also showcasing Newlands Golf Club as a welcoming and competitive venue.
For younger golfers in particular, the Junior Scratch Cup provides valuable experience of playing in a competitive open event and the opportunity to test their game against players from outside their own club.
For the Club, the competition also provides an opportunity to welcome visiting golfers to Newlands and introduce them to the course, facilities and hospitality that the Club has to offer.
The tradition continues in 2026, with this year’s Newlands Scratch Cups taking place on Saturday, September 19.
The competition promises another excellent day of competitive golf at Newlands, with golfers from clubs across Dublin and beyond invited to take on the course and compete for the prestigious Scratch Cup trophies.
Bookings open on Thursday, 20 August at 8.00pm and can be made through the Newlands Golf Club website.
The visitor entry fee is €50, which includes a €10 meal voucher, providing competitors with the opportunity to enjoy some food and refreshments at the Club following their round.
