As the Sunshine Tour resumed after its mid-season break, Liam Grehan welcomed a return to form that saw The K Club man shoot a second-round 67 to occupy a share of 15th place going into the final 36 holes at the SunBet Challenge at Wingate Park Country Club in Pretoria.
The Mullingar native opened with a three-under 69 and that’s how he remained through nine holes in round two having bogeyed the third and birdied the ninth. That birdie before the turn sparked a revival that saw him reel off three-in-a-row from the 11th, then take care of the par-5 15th and 18th holes to shoot a five-under 67 that moved him to -8 overall and he ended the day just four shots out of a tie for second.
Rowan Lester’s week was one to forget as rounds of 72 and 73 saw him miss the cut by four, but Grehan, who ranked 80th coming into the week, now has a good chance to earn much-needed Order of Merit points in his second season on the Sunshine Tour.
With several DP World Tour winners in the field, including Thriston Lawrence who lies in a three-way tie for second at -12, it was two-time Sunshine Tour winner Herman Loubser who set the halfway target.
The South African made an eagle and eight birdies in a bogey-free 10-under 62 to move three shots clear at -15.
