Simon Thornton, Damian Mooney, and Colm Moriarty finished in a three-way tie for victory at the Elm Park Pro-Am after shooting matching three-under 66s.
Thornton, the reigning Elavon Order of Merit champion and current leader was among the early starters and found 17 of the 18 greens in regulation and he was joined shortly afterwards by Lough Erne’s Mooney.
It looked as though former champion and course record holder Moriarty of Condor.ie, playing in the afternoon wave, was about to add another Elm Park Pro Am title to his resume, but a bogey on the last allowed Thornton and Moriarty back into a share with Cormac Sharvin and Niall Kearney sharing fourth at -1.
“It was playing really tricky, so I though three-under had a decent chance of hanging on,” said Thornton. “But you never know and it wouldn’t really have surprised me if somebody had gone out and shot four- or five-under either.
“Hitting 17 of the 18 greens in regulation was really good and I’m very happy with that, but it wasn’t easy to get the ball close to the hole so there was a lot of two-putt pars.
“But I’m really happy with how I played and with a lot of golf coming up with the PGA Cup team get together, the PGA Open Series in Carlow, and the Irish PGA Championship coming up in Limerick, I think the game is in a good place and that’s a great way to be when the events are coming thick and fast.”
