Wyndham Clark certainly wasn’t the fan favourite at Shinnecock Hills on Sunday, but the Denver native had the last laugh as he walked off with the U.S. Open trophy and $4.5 million in prizemoney.
Three years after pipping Rory McIlroy to the USGA’s showpiece title at L.A. Country Club thanks to a superb lag putt from length on the 72nd hole, he did the same again to Sam Burns but this time he pocketed an additional $900,000.
This was Clark’s fifth victory since joining the PGA Tour in 2019 – two majors, two signature events – and this win takes his total PGA Tour career earnings past the $38 million mark.
Burns – a five-time PGA Tour winner himself – had to settle for second and a consolation prize of $2,430,000, which was his second largest paycheque after the $3.5 million he earned in winning the 2023 Dell Technologies WGC Matchplay title. He joined the PGA Tour the same year Clark did, but has now earned more than $40 million.
Tom Kim’s solo third-place finish was good for just over $1.5 million, while Scottie Scheffler, JT Poston and Keith Mitchell each collected $900k and change for sharing fourth.
Rory McIlroy’s week ended on a slightly sour note with back-to-back 73s, but he still earned a six-figure sum as he added another $128,756 to his bank account.
On the LPGA Tour, Lottie Woad three-putted the 72nd hole, lipping out a four-footer with her second roll, to open the door for Miyu Yamashita who then held her nerve to birdie the first playoff hole and deny the Englishwoman a third LPGA Tour win.
The Japanese collected the first prize of $487,500, while Woad had to settle $305,678, meaning that that short miss effectively cost her $182,000.
Lauren Walsh could get nothing going in the final round and had to settle for a T56 finish and just over $9,000 in earnings.
