Rowan Lester and Liam Grehan are both safely through to the final two rounds of the Sunshine Tour’s KCM Golf Challenge at Nchanga Golf Club having both missed the cut at last week’s Zambia Open.

Lester, who came into the week ranked 68th on the Order of Merit, opened with a three-under 69 but dropped two shots in his first three holes in round two. He made the turn at one-over after birdiening the seventh, then added three more birdies on the back before a bogey at the last left a slightly sour taste in his mouth.

His one-under 71 leaves him on -4 overall and tied for 26th going into the final round.

Grehan, who won on the Big Easy Tour a fortnight ago for his first professional victory, looked set to miss the cut in the final Sunshine Tour event before the two-month mid-season break when, after a one-over 73 on day one, he bogeyed three of his six holes with just one birdie to fall to +3.

An eagle on the 17th – his eighth – sparked a revival, however, and he went bogey-free for the final 10 holes, adding crucial birdies on six and seven which got him into red figures for the week and he made the cut on the number at one-under.

South African Pieter Moolman will take a one-stroke lead into the final two rounds despite taking six strokes more in round two than he did on day one. His opening 63 gave him a two-stroke lead after 18 holes but that’s been reduced to one as Zimbabwe’s Robson Chinhoi matched Moolman’s first-round score on day two.

A further four South Africans share third place at -10, two off the lead.
