Alex Maguire shot a three-under-par 67 to climb into a share of 17th place going into the final round of the Clutch Pro Tour’s Stromberg Masters presented by Andy Sullivan at Moseley Golf Club in Birmingham.

The Royal County man opened with a level-par 70 and had only been able to claw his way to one-under as he stood on the 16th tee in round two but a birdie-birdie finish lifted him to within four shots of third place as he looks to maintain his strong position on the Order of Merit where he only has fellow countryman Paul McBride above him.

McBride won’t be picking up any points this week as he was unable to sufficiently recover from a three-over opening round and missed the cut by two, but Maguire has company in the form of Dermot McElroy, John Murphy and Daniel Mulligan.

McElroy followed his opening 69 with a level-par 70 to share 31st, with Murphy one behind in a tie for 40th after improving on his opening round by two, while Mulligan, coming off the back of his best result of the season where he finished 23rd at last week’s Motocaddy Championship, made the cut on the number after going 69-72 to lie one-over.

Marc Boucher and Robert Brazill were unfortunate to miss the cut by the minimum, with McBride one further back and Brandon St John well down the field.

England’s Giles Evans, who came into the week ranked ninth in the Order of Merit, holds a three-stroke lead after a blistering 62 that was two shots lower than the next best in round two.

He sits at -11, with Canada’s Callum Davison in solo second at -8 and the four-way tie for third includes two Englishmen, a Scot and an American.
