West of Ireland champion Mark Cadden was quick out of the traps on day one of the Brabazon Trophy and he sits six shots off the pace at Moortown Golf Club.
Cadden carded a three-under 68 to lie just outside the top-10 as England’s Tom Osborne blitzed the field with a nine-under 62 to open a three shot lead.
All of Cadden’s work came on the front nine as he opened with two pars before rolling in back to back birdies on the third and fourth. The Roganstown star bounced back from a bogey on the fifth with another brace of birdies before a bogey on the eighth and birdie on the ninth brought an end to a rollercoaster front nine of 33.
The back nine was very uneventful in comparison for the Oldcastle native who came home in nine straight pars.
Carton House’s Keith Egan is a shot further back on two-under after a 69 that included four birdies and a double bogey on the par-4 14th. He is alongside 18-year-old Fota Island hotshot John Doyle.
Glasson youngster and Fairhaven Trophy winner Isaac Oliver made a bright start to his tournament debut with a one-under 70 while Matthew McClean and Paul Coughlan are level-par.
Gavin Tiernan and David Howard have work to do to make the top-60 cut on three and six-over respectively.
