Robbie Cannon took first round leader honours at the North of Ireland Amateur Championship at Royal Portrush thanks to a four-under-par on the Valley Course.
The Balbriggan man made five birdies and an eagle enroute to a 68 that leaves him one stroke clear of reigning West of Ireland champion Mark Cadden and former Irish Amateur Open champion Matthew McClean.
Cadden made three birdies in a bogey-free effort and parred his way home from the 11th, while McClean made five birdies, including on his final two holes, to draw within one at the end of day one.
Edmondstown’s Patrick Curran sits in solo fourth at -2, with Dylan Harbourne, Cian Harkin, Simon Ward and Dylan Keating the only other players to break par in the strong winds on the Causeway Coast and they share fifth.
The field now moves over to the Dunluce Course for round two before the field will be reduced and those that make the cut play 36 holes on the final day.
