Despite the gorgeous conditions there was enough wind to keep Ireland’s young stars honest as Corrstown proved a stern test with Olivia Costello and Hannah Lee-McNamara sharing the first round lead at the Flogas Irish Girls’ Amateur Open Championship.
Both players carded rounds of two-under 70 and were the only players to end the day in red figures as they opened up a two-shot advantage over the rest of the field.
Roscommon star Costello was very steady with two birdies and sixteen pars in a bogey free effort while Royal Portrush’s Lee-McNamara traded four birdies and two bogeys.
Costello’s birdies came on the 7th and 17th while Lee-McNamara was in the solo lead after birdies on the 2nd 5th, 11th and 14th with just one bogey coming on the 9th. But she dropped a late shot on the par-4 16th to fall back alongside Costello at days end.
It is a packed leaderboard with just three shots separating eleven players heading into what should be an exciting weekend.
Jessica Reynolds of County Sligo, Royal Portrush’s Ella Proctor and Forrest Little star Grace Dowdall are all on level-par after opening 72s.
Ulster U18 Girls’ Amateur Open Championship and Ballybunion Scratch Cup winner Ella Cantwell of Esker Hills is part of a six-way tie for sixth on one-over after a 73.
