Anna Abom looked back to her best as she left the field in her wake to take a seven shot lead into the final round of the inaugural Women’s South of Ireland Amateur Open Championship.
History beckoned at Lahinch as the first of four new Golf Ireland championships got underway. With World Amateur Golf Ranking Points on offer the regional series represents another significant step forward in strengthening the women’s amateur game in Ireland.
It was Abom who made the quickest start with an opening 70 in the morning to lead by two shots on four-under-par and she backed that up with an afternoon 68, the low round of the weekend, to reach ten-under with Deirdre Smith of Co. Louth chasing her on three-under after rounds of 74 and 71.
The Edmondstown star played some sensational golf in patches. She recovered from an early triple bogey with five birdies and an eagle to post 70 while her afternoon 68 saw her card a hat trick of birdies on two occasions as she looked in a league of her own.
Despite the superb weather conditions, Lahinch still played tough with only two further players ending the first 36 holes in red figures. Hermitage star Kate Lanigan is two-under after back to back rounds of 73 while Esker Hills youngster Ella Cantwell is on one-under after rounds of 76 and 71.
Local player Aideen Walsh is on plus one while Mary Dowling of New Ross is level-par.
