Jessica Ross pushed Grace Bowen all the way on the final day of the Helen Holm Scottish Women’s Open Championship but she had to settle for second place at Royal Troon.
Despite closing with the lowest round of the week, 68, Ross came up two shots shy of the Englishwoman on three-under-par.
Ross showed why she is the European Mid-Amateur champion and she laid the gauntlet down to Bowen early on as she roared out of the traps with back to back birdies as she ate into the five shot deficit.
Bowen opened with a bogey but bounced back with a birdie on the 2nd and a crucial eagle on the par-5 4th. Ross meanwhile rallied again with birdies on the 5th and 6th to trim the gap to three shots heading into the back nine.
Bowen came home in solid fashion with a bogey on 10 and eight closing pars while Ross traded birdies on 12 and 18 with bogeys on the 11th and 17th.
It was a positive week for the Irish overall with Kate Lanigan closing with a 71 for a ten-over total which was good enough for a solo eighth place finish while Anna Atom’s 74 gave her a tenth place finish on twelve-over.
Kayleigh Mulholland was 17th while Gemma McMeekin was 56th and Aideen Walsh 62nd.
