John Murphy will go into the final round of the Clutch Pro Tour’s Motocaddy Masters at Heythrop Park one shot behind the leaders after a second-round 71 moved him to nine-under-par.
The Kinsale man has endured a tough stretch since earning a DP World Tour card for the 2023 season at Q-School, but he hinted that the good times may be back on the horizon with an opening, bogey-free eight-under on Tuesday.
It wasn’t quite as impressive on Wednesday, but after opening with a bogey, he still managed to claw his way into red figures for the round thanks to three birdies with one further dropped shot and he shares fifth place, one behind the leading quartet of Jackson Skeen of the United States and a trio of Englishmen in Toby Tree, Harry Goddard and Ryan Brooks.
Robert Brazill is two shots further adrift after adding a second-round 68 to the 69 he shot on Tuesday. A bogey on the 10th was the only blemish on his card, and it came after birdies on four, six and seven. He closed out the round with further birdies on 14 and 18, and shares 15th place with 18 holes to go.
Alex Maguire (-5), and Marc Boucher and Tyler Hogarty (-4) all see final-round action after making the cut. Maguire’s 68 saw him make the biggest move of the three, while both Boucher and Hogarty also had to come from the wrong side of the provisional cutline with matching rounds of 70.
Dermot McElroy, who ended with a 36-hole tally of two-under, missed the cut by two, while Tom Dowdall, Brandon St John, Paul McBride and Scott Montgomery also missed out.
