John Murphy was one of three Irishmen to finish tied for fifth at the Clutch Pro Tour’s Motocaddy Masters at Heythrop Park in the English midlands, but the Kinsale man will be a little disappointed having held a share of the lead with eight holes left to play.
Murphy began the final round a shot off the lead after following his opening 64 with a one-under 71, and two front nine birdies and another on 10 saw him grab a share of the lead at -12 before back-to-back bogeys on 11 and 12.
He responded to pick up shots on 14 and 16, and reached the par-5 closing hole needing an eagle to force a playoff but instead was forced to settle for a bogey that dropped him into a tie for fifth alongside Tyler Hogarty and Robert Brazill.
Hogarty’s 65, which featured nine birdies and two bogeys, was the round of the day from an Irish perspective, and it saw him climb 36 places on the leaderboard, while Brazill, having opened with 12 straight pars, birdied four of his final six holes to card a 68.
Alex Maguire also closed with a 68 to finish tied for 13th on -9, while Marc Boucher followed a pair of 70s with a 71 to end the week tied for 37th at -5.
Englishman OJ Farrell took top honours on the week, shooting a final-round 66 to leapfrog to the top of the leaderboard and secure a one-stroke win over fellow countryman Jamie Rutherford who finished on -13.
