Anna Foster and Lauren Walsh got off to good starts at the German Masters, but Olivia Mehaffey was forced to withdraw for an unknown reason.

Foster is the best of the Irish, after carding a three-under-par 71 to sit two shots back of a quartet of co-leaders at Green Eagle Golf courses.

Walsh is a further shot back on two-under-par but it was a day to forget for Olivia Mehaffey who was forced to withdraw mid-round with an unknown injury.

England’s Alice Hewson, Germany’s Helen Briem, New Zealand’s Amelia Garvey and Sweden’s Ellinor Südow all fired rounds of five-under-par on day one to sit at the top of the leaderboard in Germany.

Germany’s Briem, who won the 2024 La Sella Open, had seven birdies and two bogeys on her scorecard on the first day of action.

“I think my day was really solid, I improved my putting and my wedges,” said the 19-year-old. “I had many birdie chances and used many of them, so I’m really happy with them.”

Four players are in a share of fifth place with Czechia’s Patricie Mackova, English duo Hannah Screen and Bronte Law, and India’s Diksha Dagar all on four-under-par.

One shot further back in T9 is the sextet of Singapore’s Shannon Tan, Ireland’s Foster, Australia’s Kelsey Bennett, France’s Anne-Charlotte Mora, and Danish pair Sofie Kibsgaard Nielsen and Natacha Host Husted.

Canice Screene will need a good second round to challenge at the weekend after a one-over-par 74 to open on the unique par 74.

Screene is underway at 8.19am Irish time, while Walsh and Foster are in the afternoon wave, at 12.03pm and 1.09pm Irish time respectively.
