Paul McBride is just four shots off the lead with 18 holes to go in the Q Hotels Collection Open at Forest Pines Golf Club in Lincolnshire after a bogey-free three-under round of 70 on day two.
Birdies on 10 – his opening hole – 15 and five and the blemish-free card helped him make good upward progress on a day where just five players shot rounds in the 60s on the par-73 layout, and at -4, he’s tied for 10th and well within striking distance.
McBride, who represents The Island, lies 39th on the Order of Merit and another good round on Friday would see him make a major leap up the rankings.
Robert Brazill is two shots further adrift in a share of 17th, while James Sugrue, who lies eighth in the Order of Merit and harbours high hopes of claiming one of three HotelPlanner Tour cards on offer at the end of the season, sits on level-par after back-to-back 73s.
Jack Madden missed out in devastating fashion with a closing triple bogey seeing him miss the cut by the minimum, while John Ross Galbraith, Daniel Mulligan and Andrew Browne also missed out.
The English trio of Callum Farr, Tom Plumb and Thomas Thurloway share the lead at -8, with a further five players tied for fourth at -6.
