The second round of the 2025 Joburg Ladies Open has been suspended for the day due to a flooded course, with home favourite Casandra Alexander leading the way on nine-under par. The South African only played three holes on Friday – birdying two – with the afternoon wave yet to complete their second rounds at Modderfontein Golf Club.
Round two will resume tomorrow morning at 8:00am local time with England’s Mimi Rhodes – yesterday’s overnight leader – on eight-under par with 13 holes remaining. The rookie birdied the second and dropped a shot on the 3rd so sits on par for the round as it stands.
After yesterday’s round one was suspended, the Joburg Ladies Open resumed this morning with the remaining eight groups completing their 18 holes.
Following the conclusion of round one, only two shots separated the top three with rookie Rhodes, home favourite Alexander and Singapore’s Shannon Tan holding onto their early scores.
Lauren Walsh is four shots behind on five-under after she was unable to take to the course for her second round while Sara Byrne made a small move in the right direction with two birdies and one bogey in her first five holes to climb to two-under-par.
Annabel Wilson will miss the cut on six-over after the carded a round of 77.
Denmark’s Smilla Tarning Soenderby climbed the leaderboard, carding seven birdies, to move into a tie for fourth place on five-under par alongside Ireland’s Walsh. The Dane is one-over par for the second round with two holes remaining.
Rain continued to fall throughout the day at Modderfontein Golf Club, and during the second round, play was again suspended at 1:02pm (local time) due to a flooded course. Despite nearly half of the field being able to complete their round (60 players), the rest had to finish up for the day.
Alexander Swayne, who represents the US Virgin Islands, had three more holes still to play before play was suspended, however was able to climb 17 places to go from T20 to T3. The 24-year-old is currently tied with Walsh and England’s Alice Hewson, who are both yet to finish their rounds.
“Today was good. I started my day off at hole five this morning as I had a few more holes to play of round one. I played well to finish my first round and just kept it going into my second, because I didn’t have much of a break. I think I had 40 minutes before my second-round tee time. It’s quite difficult out there with this weather, so just trying to keep a good attitude. I have good playing partners, so that’s great”, said Swayne.
“The course is playing very different to last year. Obviously, with the weather that we’ve had, it is extremely wet. Last year it was super, super dry and the ball was bouncing a bunch.”
“I absolutely love South Africa. It’s one of my favourite places to play golf so I can’t complain. I also have a great host family this week. I’m staying with Ashleigh Buhai’s parents with Mike and Debbie. I’m being taken care of for sure, and I’m in a place that I feel very comfortable, so all is good.”
France’s Agathe Laisne posted the round of the day, carding a six-under par to better yesterday’s score by 10 shots.
The 25-year-old said: “I made a lot of putts so that helped and I had 17 greens on regulation, so that helped a lot too. I’m used to playing in conditions like this. In France, it rains a lot, I like it, it’s fun and different.”
