The prize-purse for this year’s 88th Masters continues to grow with this year’s champion set to pocket $3.6m of the record-setting $20m purse.

That’s up $360,000 on the $3.24m handed to Spaniard Jon Rahm who won a year ago at Augusta National.

As well, the top-3 finishes this week will each earn over $1m while the top-10 will earn in excess of $500,000 and with the player finishing 50th taking away $50,400 that will easily cover his Augusta expenses.

However, the 2024 winner’s Masters prize cheque will still be second to the $4.5m Scottie Scheffler took home last month in capturing the PGA Tour’s flagship Players Championship that carried a record-setting purse of $25m

Compare this week’s first prize to 20-years ago when Phil Mickelson collected $1.117m in winning the first of three Augusta National green jackets.

Forty years ago, Ben Crenshaw earned $108,000 in capturing the 1984 Master while 50-years ago in 1974 Gary Player won a second green jacket and a first prize of $35,000.

And let’s go back to the first hosting of the Masters in 1934 when Horton Smith was handed $1,500 and that was the first prize pay-out up to and including 1942.

The first million dollar Masters champion was who else but Tiger Woods in capturing a second Masters in 2001 to earn $1,008,000.

And Woods created another piece of Masters history in winning a fifth Masters in 2019 and becoming the first $2m earner with a first prize of $2,070,000.

The first prize remained that amount for four Masters until last year when there was a jump of $540,000.

It was the biggest jump in one year in terms of first place prize money in the history of the Masters.
