A stumbling finish might have put a dent in Wyndham Clark’s hopes of becoming the first first-time winner of the Masters in 45 years, but he believes final round fatigue will help him chase down Bryson DeChambeau.

The US Open champion was impressing on his debut at Augusta National before a double bogey on 15 and a closing bogey saw him slip to a one-over 73 which leaves him eight shots behind DeChambeau and seven behind world number one, Scottie Scheffler.

Clark has fast become one of golf’s emerging characters, coming out with some risky yet witty comments and he aimed a warning jibe at LIV Golf to signal that he isn’t out of contention just yet.

“Yeah, we’ve got 54 holes. In LIV Golf they only play 54, so I like my chances. We’ve got a lot of golf left. As you can see, someone shot 7-under. I could do that tomorrow.”

Like Rory McIlroy, Clark also struggled to take advantage of the four par fives, playing them in two shots worse at two-over-par and he knows that was the difference.

“Honestly, I didn’t get to go for any of them, other than 8. I missed a six-footer on 13, I three-putted 8, didn’t hit a good wedge on 2, and then obviously spun off on 15. I played them fine, just the score wasn’t good. That’s probably the biggest takeaway. You play that 2-under, it’s a totally different round.

“I mean, as you can see, the wind is pretty challenging. It’s unfortunate, I played really good on the front nine, and I honestly played really good on the back nine. Just not birdieing 13 was kind of tough and then spinning it in the water on 15 really put a damper on the round. You take that away, it’s a 2, 3 round, maybe even better, and we’re in a good spot.”
