The Dunas Course at Terras da Comporta –  one of the most talked-about golf course design projects in 2023 – continues to push the boundaries after signing an agreement to become the first course in Portugal to be digitalised and available to play across a variety of golf software platforms.

Vanguard Properties, the owners of Terras da Comporta, has agreed a long-term partnership with leading US software provider TruGolf that will give golfers the chance to play The Dunas Course on launch monitors, golf simulators and, eventually, computer gaming platforms.

TruGolf will send a team of engineers to Lisbon this spring to undertake a full 3D scan of the par-71 links layout using the latest state-of-the-art technology, with The Dunas Course set to be available to play on simulators at Terras da Comporta’s golf academy with FlightScope technology.

As part of the agreement, golfers and guests will have the opportunity to play and practice on The Dunas Course on the launch monitors and simulators that are being installed on the driving range and indoor studios using TruGolf’s innovative E6 simulator software.

Rodrigo Ulrich, director of golf at Terras da Comporta, said: “This is another first for Terras da Comporta and we couldn’t be more excited.

“We want to give as many people as possible the opportunity to play The Dunas Course, whether it be in person, on a golf simulator or playing a computer game. Signing this partnership with TruGolf will help us to do just that, enabling Terras da Comporta to stay at the forefront of golf technology and golf in Portugal.”

Founded in 1983, TruGolf is a market leader in developing the finest golf simulation software, while the company was also responsible for creating the best-selling PC golf franchise, Links™.

“At TruGolf, we are in search of architecturally significant and intriguing golf courses around the world,” said Mason Jones, TruGolf’s vice-president of marketing.

“We want to bring our customers not only the most historic courses, but also the best new modern courses being built. The Dunas Course is exceptional and we are excited to share it through E6 to our users.”

Located one hour south of Lisbon, The Dunas Course at Terras da Comporta is David McLay-Kidd’s first golf course in mainland Europe and has made headlines around the world since first opening for play last June – including being named as the ‘World’s Best New Golf Course’ and ‘Europe’s Best New Golf Course’ at the 2023 World Golf Awards.

Situated on the coast in a secluded setting on the edge of the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve, The Dunas Course – which measures 6,646 metres off the back tees – has been created over 84 hectares of natural, sandy terrain and has been built using the highest sustainable practices.

Owned by Vanguard Properties, Portugal’s largest real estate developer who took ownership of the development in 2019, Terras da Comporta features two large developments: Torre, comprising 365 hectares of land and where a second course designed by Sergio Garcia is being built (set to follow in 2025), and Dunas, which occupies around 1,011 hectares.

Complementing The Dunas Course will be a new clubhouse and golf academy. Away from the fairways, an array of lifestyle activities will be available including horse-riding, wellness, tennis, padel, pickleball and many other sports, with a wide range of plots for hotels, tourist and residential condominiums also on offer.
