Four weeks after Ronan Mullarney became the first player to win four Toro Tour events when the final round of the first 2024 event to be held at San Roque’s New Course in southern Spain, Stuart Grehan is hoping to add his name to the list of San Roque winners.

Having practically lapped the field to win by a dozen shots after going 63, 62, 62 at Atalaya Golf Club last week, the Tullamore man faced drastically different conditions in this week’s opening round and a three-over 75 turned out to be one of the better scores on the day, leaving him tied for seventh overall and just four back.

Cork Golf Club’s Paddy Quill is next best of the Irish quartet at +7, lying T17 overall and tied for 12th in the amateur category.

Fellow Maynooth University students Cathal MacCanna and David O’Malley had days to forget in the strong winds, but they’ll have the chance to redeem themselves over the next 36 holes.

Canadian Jacob Lehman and Dutch amateur Tom Van Balen lead at -1 after the opening day, and they are the only players at par or lower.
