Elm Park amateur Emma Fleming will take a one shot lead into the second round of the R&A Student Tour Series event in Portugal.

Fleming, the Bridgestone Order of Merit winner, carded a level-par 72 which edged her clear of Thea Fridh and serial winner Lorna McClymont.

The UCD student opened with eight successive pars before dropping a shot at the ninth. She got that shot back immediately with a bounce back birdie on the 10th before a bogey, birdie run on 12 and 13 was followed by five closing pars.

Maynooth University student Kate Lanigan, the winner in Italy, is three shots off the lead on three-over while Ulster University’s Kate Dwyer is in ninth place on six-over.

In the men’s section there is a three-way tie for the lead with Ben Brookes, William Leu and Judd Sundelson on top at two-under.

Maynooth duo Ryan Griffin and Alex King are two shot back on level-par with Simon Walker a shot further back.

Ulster University’s Ronan McCrory is also on plays one while Liam Abom, David Kitt, Allan Hill (all Maynooth University) and Robert Walsh Jnr (UCC) are plus three.
