Ireland off to a flyer at Men’s Octagonal Matches

A dominant afternoon singles performance saw Ireland sweep Portugal aside on the opening day of the Men’s Octagonal  Matches in Costa Ballena, Spain.

With the scores level at 1.5 points apiece after the morning foursomes, a Fionn Dobbin inspired Irish side tore into Portugal in the afternoon singles, romping to a 7-2 win.

Malone star, Dobbin, alosngide Donnacha Cleary of Tipperary, recorded a 6&5 win in the foursomes before Dobbin marched to a 7&6 win in the singles having been four up after nine.


Junior Ryder Cup star Sean Keeling came from 2dn early on in his singles match to record a 3&2 win.

Douglas golfer Jack Murphy came out on the right side of a rollercoaster match, with a win on the 18th hole while Jack Hearn (Tramore) eased to a 3&2 win.

Cleary ended the day unbeaten with a half point in the singles while David Shiel (Enniscrone), the elder statesman at 35, closed out a 2&1 win and a sensational singles swoop for Ireland.
