Fun is the aim of the game for Alex Maguire as he looks to claim a special win at the Home of Golf on the final day of the St Andrews Links Trophy.

A superb six-under 66 catapulted the Laytown&Bettystown man to within two shots ahead of the 36 hole Sunday courtesy of five birdies in a row on the front nine and a birdie on 18.

Maguire wasn’t named in the provisional Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup panel since coming home from the US he has been in scintillating form and is proving very difficult to ignore. Finishes of 4th in the Irish Amateur, 14th at the Brabazon before successfully defending his East of Ireland title last week have made him the most likely of the Irish hopefuls to force his way in from the outside and a major title at St Andrews would go a long way to pleading his case.

“I have no expectations really, I’m going to go out there and have as much fun as I can. I mean, it’s the Old Course at St Andrews, standing here on the 18th green watching the lads come in, it is such a special place.

“Even when I was six-under in round two I wasn’t really nervous I was just enjoying the moment. It’s just so cool to play here and it’s such a special venue.

“Obviously I would love to win a trophy but with two rounds to go I’m going to go out there and have as much fun as possible. That was my mentality going into the East and it served me well so hopefully continue that over the 36 holes on Sunday.”
