Connemara’s Luke O’Neill came through a playoff to advance from a 2023 US Open Local Qualifying Event as he qualified for Final Qualifying next month.

O’Neill was competing in the 18-hole qualifier at Oakwood Country Club in Kansas City and he became the first Great Britain and Ireland amateur to progress to Final Qualifying ahead of next month’s US Open Championship in Los Angeles.

O’Neill carded a four-over 76 which left him in a share of fifth place alongside James Ackerman and Green Aggarwal, but the Galway man was the last one standing at the end of a playoff as he took the final qualifying spot.

The Kansas State student was level-par after ten holes but a double bogey on the twelfth, a birdie on sixteen and a double bogey, bogey finish saw him home in 39.

O’Neill has been in good form this year picking up a top-6 finish at the Tiger Intercollegiate last month.
