The PGA in Ireland have added a new PGA Pro-Am to the schedule with the inaugural Donegal Pro-Am coming to Donegal Golf Club Murvagh from July 7-8.

Sponsored by Total Splicing Solutions Ltd of Donegal Town, the pro-am will be a two-day event played on the Donegal links.

Michael McGeady was the driving force behind the new pro-am having approached Donegal Murvagh towards the end of last year with the 2013 Irish PGA champion delighted to see the Irish PGA Region returning to Donegal.

“I was very keen to get the PGA Pro-Am’s back into the North West,” said McGeady. I went to Donegal Golf Club Murvagh and asked them about hosting a pro-am and they were really excited and wondering how to do it.

“I introduced them to Conor in the PGA and we took it from there. It looks like it’s going to be a very strong event. We have a great date in the calendar which is super and means we can maximise the amount of teams that can play in it. I’m really looking forward to it.

“We used to have some great pro-ams in the north west of Ireland so it’s great to have one back. I approached local clubs and Murvagh were really eager. This is their first pro-am.”

The former Challenge Tour winner is keen for the event to leave a legacy for the amateurs participating in the hope they will continue to play in the event in the future and be enticed to come back to play other golf courses in the north west of Ireland.

“It’s our job as the PGA Professional to make the amateurs feel like it’s their event and make sure when they come off the golf course on day two that they want to come back next year. It’s going to be a special event and very enjoyable for the amateur to play in.

“We want the amateur to enjoy it and come back to play more golf courses up around this area of the country.”

Manager of Donegal Golf Club Murvagh, Grainne Dorrian is keen to show off what Donegal has to offer and hopes the pro-am will benefit not only the golf club but the surrounding areas.

“It’s great to get a pro-am into Donegal, we are quite excited about it. It’ll be good for the area and bringing people up to Donegal to see it,” said Dorrian.

“A pro-am has been talked about for a number of years then at the end of last year myself and Michael McGeady went to the committee and we reached out to the PGA for available dates.

“We will see how this year goes and we plan to have this every year going forward. Our main sponsor Total Splicing in Donegal Town are delighted to be on board. They help us because you can’t run an event without the sponsor alongside us.”

The cost to enter a team is €750 and you can contact https://www.donegalgolfclub.ie for more details.
