Slow start for both Ireland squads at the Euro Nations

Matthew McClean is the best of the Irish at the European Nations Championship after a sluggish opening day for the Men and Women in Green in Sotogrande.

Fresh off a bright performance at the Masters a fortnight ago, despite missing the cut, the Malone native shares 12th place after a one-under 71.

The US Mid-Amateur champion trails England’s John Gough by four shots. The highlight of his round was three birdies in a row from the sixth.

Douglas’ Peter O’Keeffe shares 53rd after a six-over 78 while Rob Moran and Joshua Hill are a shot further back in 61st.

Ireland are languishing in 14th in the 17-team competition in the men’s section.

Scratch Cup specialist Emma Fleming was drafted in late to the Women’s side and she leads the Irish charge after a four-over 76.

The Elm Park golfer is in a share of 20th place with Katie Poots on six-over and Aideen Walsh on nine-over.

Things aren’t looking much better for the girls in green as they share 8th place on ten-over, twelve shots shy of Finland.
