The curse of the leading qualifiers struck Lauren Walsh’s Wake Forest as they were beaten 3-2 by Virginia in the semi finals of the ACC Women’s Match Championship.

Wake Forest were top seeds having won the stroke play event with Walsh finishing fifth but they bowed out in the last four.

Walsh was beaten on the 18th in what was a great if unfulfilled comeback. The Castlewarden native was four down after ten holes but railed to win holes 14, 15 and 16 but she was unable to turn her match around against Amanda Sambach.

There was also no joy for Aine Donegan and Anna Foster in the SEC Championship as LSU and Auburn both crashed out.

Donegan’s LSU progressed to the semi-finals where they were beaten 3-2 by Minnesota State while Foster’s Auburn went down 3-2 to South Carolina in the last eight.

Foster was beaten 4&3 by Mia Lussand while Lahinch’s Donegan was beaten on 18 in both her quarter-final and semi-final ties.
