Douglas’ Jack Murphy overturned a two-shot overnight deficit to win the Connacht Boys’ Amateur Open Championship in Ballinrobe.

Murphy shot successive rounds of 72 for a two-under total as he pipped Ballinasloe’s Charlie Mooney and Fota Island’s John Doyle by two shots.

The teenager adds the Connacht title to the Munster Boys Championship which he will defend later this year.

Murphy broke the back of his challenge during a sensational front nine of 34 after he raced to three-under for the day through six holes.

He added a fourth birdie in eight holes before dropping his first shot of the day on 9.

Now in the lead, Murphy could allow for bogeys on 14 and 17 with Doyle and Mooney unable to catch him.

Fota’s Doyle had a rollercoaster round as he tried to hold onto his first round advantage. Double bogeys came on 3 and 17 but there were also five birdies and one bogey in a round that included just seven pars.

Rounds of 70 and 76 left him sharing second on level-par with Mooney who shot successive rounds of 73.
