Matthew McClean is five shots off the pace after the opening round of the Azalea Invitational at the Country Club of Charleston.

McClean, who is preparing for his debut at the Masters in two weeks, opened with a level-par 71 to share 22nd place as PJ Maybank III leads on five-under.

The Malone native started brightly with a pair of birdies on holes four and five. A birdie on 9 cancelled out a dropped shot on 7 as he turned in 34.

The back nine wasn’t as fruitful for the US Mid-Amateur champion who was making his first competitive appearance since his win in Erin Hills, as he bogeyed 11 and 15 to drop back to par.

There are a couple of notable names in the field with John Daly II in fifth place on two-under after an opening 69 while Ian Poulter’s son Luke, is alongside McClean on level-par.
