Sean Keeling’s bid for a fourth win on Spanish soil this year came to an end in extra holes at the last-16 stage of the Spanish Amateur Championship.

Keeling’s fate was sealed by a familiar face in Irish amateur golf as Switzerland’s Nicola Gerhardsen pipped Keeling on the 19th.

Gerhardsen was runner-up in the 2021 Irish Amateur Championship to Peter O’Keeffe in the European Club.

It was a double Irish scalp for the Swiss after seeing off Royal Dublin’s Richard Knightly 3&1 in the morning last-32 matches.

In the last-32, Keeling beat Pablo Perez Gracia 3&1 to continue his Spanish Inquisition, although his potential second all Irish clash was quashed by Knightly’s misfortune.

The Roganstown starlet was all-square at the turn in a tight contest and three successive pars saw him remain on the coattails of Gerhardsen through twelve holes.

But he came undone in extra time with Gerhardsen marching on to the quarter-finals.

In the Ladies Spanish Amateur Lahinch’s Aideen Walsh was beaten 4&2 by Cloe Amion Villarino while Spanish based Marina Joyce Moreno saw her hopes dashed by Frenchwoman Ines Archer 3&2.
